New England champions highlight

Winter All-Scholastics

For the fifth straight year, the Winter All-Scholastics section has returned to the Valley Breeze & Observer Newspapers, and it’s again recognizing a deserving male and female student-athlete from each of our circulation’s high schools for their overall excellence in athletics and academics.

There are plenty of All-State, All-Division, and All-Academic selections, as well as state, New England, and national champions, among these 21 seniors, six juniors, and a record three sophomores.

Six are returning All-Scholastic picks, and for the first time in the history of this section, there are as many as nine indoor track and field athletes and three competition cheerleaders.

A very special thanks to the athletic directors and high school coaches who took the time to help with their input and information on their schools’ selections, as well as photographer Erik Scalavino, who took a handful of these pictures, and our publisher, Jamie Quinn, for his exceptional work on the design of the cover of this section. Without these contributions, the creation of this special section wouldn’t have been possible.

We hope you again enjoy reading this special section as much as we enjoyed putting it together and honoring these tremendous student-athletes.

SHEA HIGH SCHOOL

Jahmel Rodrigues

Boys' Indoor Track & Field

It’s been more than 20 years since a middle distance runner from Shea enjoyed as much success in the indoor 600-meter run as Rodrigues experienced over the past two seasons.

At the state indoor meet at the Providence Career & Technical Academy field house, Rodrigues took sixth place in the 600 in a time of 1:26.84, and at the New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Roxbury, Mass., he placed 19th in a personal-best time of 1:25.64.

Before the state meet, he also shined at the Class B meet by taking third place in the 600 in 1:27.23 and also helping the 4x400 relay team finish fourth.

Last season, he again placed third in the 600 at the Class B meet in 1:27.61 and went on to finish eighth at the state meet in 1:26.93.

Rodrigues is also a member of the Pawtucket Schools’ cross country and outdoor track and field teams, and he will continue his career as a student-athlete this fall at Rhode Island College.

TOLMAN High school

Jaskeen Freitas

Girls' Indoor Track & Field

A three-sport athlete who also shined on Tolman’s girls’ volleyball and outdoor track and field teams, Freitas was exceptional in the girls’ 300-meter run, and at the state indoor meet, she turned in a time of 42.61 seconds that was only 0.2 of a second behind the fourth-place finisher.

Described by her coaches as “a natural athlete and leader” who “sets a positive example for her peers on the track and in the classroom,” Freitas also won the Headley Division championship in the 300 in 43.71 seconds and placed fifth in the 55-meter dash in 7.7.

She was also incredible at the Class B meet, as she placed second in the 300 in a personal-best 42.53 seconds and fifth in the 55-meter dash in 7.76. She came up short in her bid to claim the 300 by 0.15 of a second.

“Jazzy shows up everyday ready to work hard and run hard,” reported her coach, Joy Mitchell. “Her discipline and consistency are self-driven and seem effortless.”

During last outdoor season, Freitas grabbed three top-four finishes at the Eastern Division meet. Not only did she help the Tigers place third in the 4x100 relay, but she also placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.28 seconds and 200 in 27.34.

Freitas was also a defensive standout for Tolman’s girls’ volleyball team, and as a sophomore, she helped the Tigers win 18 matches and the Division III championship.

BLACKSTONE VALLEY PREP

Jackson Chiappetta

Boys' Swimming

One of the greatest high school careers in BVP’s decade-plus history will come to an end with the graduation of Chiappetta, who boasts an unweighted GPA of 3.98 and returns to the Winter All-Scholastics after ending his four-year run with the Pride with multiple state championships at last month’s RIIL meet at Brown University.

The Northwestern University-bound swimmer not only dominated the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:50.43, but also won the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.31 seconds. His victory in the I.M. was truly impressive because there was no one else near him for the final freestyle lap and he ended up outdistancing the runner-up finisher by a whopping 9.67 seconds.

Chiappetta also won state titles in the 100-yard backstroke last winter in a state-record time of 49.35 seconds and the 100-yard butterfly as a sophomore, and last month’s victories marked the 12th season in a row that a Pawtucket native had earned a gold medal at the state meet.

In addition to his state-record time in the backstroke, Chiappetta also owns school records in the other seven individual events: the 50-yard (22.12 seconds), 100-yard (49.43 seconds), 200-yard (1:43.81), and 500-yard (5:01.25) freestyles, the 200-yard I.M. (1:49.94), 100-yard butterfly (50.99 seconds), and 100-yard breaststroke (58.31 seconds).

Kylah Depina

Cheerleading

In the words of the BVP athletic department, Depina, who is a two-time All-Division cheerleader, “embodies what it means to be a versatile athlete. Her drive and resilience make her a natural leader, and her talent inspires those around her to be their best."

“She holds herself and her teammates to a high standard at practice, on the court, and on the competition mat.

“This past winter, while working with the Central Falls High School cheerleading team, Kylah played a vital role in helping the two teams come together seamlessly. Through her leadership, dedication, and infectious personality, she helped foster a productive, supportive, and welcoming environment for everyone involved.

“Kylah’s character, work ethic, and genuine kindness set her apart, and these qualities will undoubtedly serve her well in her future endeavors.”

DAVIES HIGH SCHOOL

Aidan Kearns

Boys' Basketball

The Patriots reached the Division III semifinals for the first time in five years and ended their season with 13 victories, and a huge reason for their success was the all-around play of Kearns, a talented forward who landed Second-Team All-Conference and First-Team All-Division recognition and a spot on the All-Tournament team. Kearns was also a First-Team All-Division pick as a junior.

Kearns, whose GPA is 3.49, averaged 17.9 points and sank 26 three-pointers during the regular season, but in the playoffs, he raised his game to another level. In the Patriots’ 78-75 double-overtime win over North Smithfield in the D-IV quarterfinals, the co-captain poured in a game-high 29 points, and in Davies’ 65-61 semifinal-round loss to Ponaganset, he scored a game-high 27 points.

Kylie Robert

Girls' Basketball

A three-year starter in the Patriots’ backcourt and one of the school’s best three-sport athletes, Robert did a little bit of everything as she helped Davies post a 19-5 record and reach the Division III semifinals. The Patriots’ 19 wins also broke the program’s 22-year-old record for the most victories in a season.

The Pawtucket native, who also holds a GPA of 3.3 in the classroom, is also a shortstop and outfielder who batted leadoff on the Patriots’ softball team and received Second-Team All-Division honors last year. She was also a captain and a goalkeeper who landed First-Team recognition on last fall’s girls’ soccer team.

St. Raphael Academy

Jameson Cordeiro

Boys' Hockey

An outstanding student who has earned Highest Honors and First Honors in each quarter of his high school career, Cordeiro was also exceptional on the ice as a forward and an unsung hero for the Blackstone Valley Schools hockey team, which made regional and national news with its inspirational run to the Division II title and saw 5th-seeded BVS knock out three higher-seeded teams on its way to championship glory.

Cordeiro, who hails from Fall River, Mass., also helped BVS reach the D-II title game as a sophomore in the squad’s inaugural season. He is also an outfielder on the Saints’ baseball team, and this fall, he will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.

Mackenzie Lickert

Girls' Indoor Track & Field

Back among the All-Scholastics after earning recognition as a cross country runner during the past fall season, which saw her win the Class C title, place second at the state meet, and go on to claim All-Region honors at the Brooks Northeast Regionals at Boston’s Franklin Park, Lickert put together a strong winter season that was highlighted by her excellence at the Class C championship meet at the Providence Career & Technical Academy field house.

The Scituate resident, who has been a Highest Honors and First Honors student throughout her high school career, not only captured the 1,000-meter run in a time of 3:08.48 and the 1,500 in 4:48.85, but also helped the Saints’ 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams place second.

At the state meet, the junior standout ran in the 3,000 and had to battle an illness and some tough competition, but she still ended up placing fourth in 10:46.03.

With two outdoor seasons and one cross country season and indoor track season still left in her excellent career, Lickert has accumulated a large collection of All-Class, All-Division, and All-State honors. She also earned Second-Team All-State honors as a sophomore and went on to total three top-five finishes in the distance events at last year’s state indoor and outdoor track and field meets.

Cumberland High School

Matt Fontaine

Boys' Indoor Track & Field

It’s been a while since a member of the Cumberland boys’ indoor track and field team put together a record-breaking season like the one Fontaine enjoyed this winter. Not only did Fontaine break three school records, but he also scored 20 points at the state championship meet by taking second place in the 55-meter hurdles and third in the 300 and the long jump.

An Honor Roll student who was named his school’s Homecoming King last fall, Fontaine became the first CHS athlete to score 20 points in a boys’ meet since 1990, and thanks to his excellent performance, the Clippers placed fifth out of 33 schools in the team standings for their highest finish since they placed fourth in the 2015 meet.

In the hurdles, he crossed the finish line in 7.54 seconds to break his school record by 0.09 of a second, but also broke the meet record, and in the 300, Fontaine clocked a time of 36.63 seconds that broke the Clippers’ 10-year-old school record by 0.22 of a second.

Fontaine, who also broke a 14-year-old school record in the long jump at the RITCA’s Last Chance Qualifier with a 22-foot-2 leap, went on to take 11th place in the hurdles and 21st place in the 300 at the New England meet, and in the latter event, he posted a time of 36.34 seconds to break his new school record by 0.29 of a second.

Charli McCue

Girls' Indoor Track & Field

The latest standout of the three-time defending state champion Cumberland girls’ cross country team to receive All-Scholastic honors, McCue is heading into her final outdoor track and field season as a five-time state champion: McCue also helped the Clippers’ 4x800 relay team win an outdoor title as a freshman, and last spring, she took sixth place in the 800 to help the Cumberland girls win their first outdoor championship since 1989.

McCue brought home her share of medals this past indoor season. At the Class A meet, she took second place in the 1,000 in a personal-best time of 3:03.16 and helped the Clippers’ 4x400 relay team place third in 4:28.97, and at the state meet, she finished fourth in the 1,000 in the same time as her PR clocking. She also competed in the 1,000 at the New England meet and took 12th place in 3:03.37.

An Honor Roll student, McCue was also a two-time First-Team All-Stater and a two-time Third-Team All-Stater in cross country. She took third place at last fall’s state meet to help the Clippers break the record for the fewest points scored by a girls’ team at the RIIL event. She also won the state middle school championship as an 8th-grader at North Cumberland Middle School.

She will continue her academic and running career this fall at American University, a Division I school, which competes in the Patriot League, in Washington, D.C.

LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL

Holden Brown

Boys' Swimming

One of the top students in his class, Brown established himself as arguably the best swimmer in the history of the school’s boys’ swim team, as the Georgetown University commit will graduate as a five-time state champion and with six school records that includes four state records.

At last month’s state championship meet at Brown University, Brown struck gold in the 200-year freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, and in the 200, he broke his state record in a time of 1:37.99, which not only topped his previous mark by two-fifths of a second, but easily topped the runner-up finisher by 4.33 seconds.

Four events later, Brown repeated as a state champion in the butterfly in 49.01 seconds and missed breaking his state record by 0.34 of a second, and in the meet’s final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, he swam the opening lap and set the state’s 100-yard freestyle record in a time of 45.21 seconds to break the year-old record by Cumberland senior Jarett Zito by 0.69 of a second.

Brown’s other two school records are in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke.

At the Division I meet at Roger Williams University, Brown was again a double winner, as he captured the 200-yard I.M. in a time of 1:53.96 and the 100-yard backstroke in 53.18 seconds.

Caleigh Parent

Girls' Swimming

Parent wrapped up an outstanding high school career in style at the state championship meet at Brown University by taking third place in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:28.60 and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.75. She also helped the Lions’ 200-yard medley team take fourth place and Lincoln place seventh out of 25 schools in the team standings.

Parent also shined at the Division I meet at Roger Williams University by placing third in the butterfly with a personal-best time of 1:01.56 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:31.43. At last season’s state meet, she had clocked a PR time of 5:28.15 in the 500.

A consistent First Honors student, whose hobby is photography and is also a National Honor Society member and a class officer, Parent will continue her swimming and academic career this fall at Connecticut College.

North providence HIGH SCHOOL

Colin Dorgan

Boys' Hockey

Everyone knows Colin Dorgan’s courageous story and the Blackstone Valley School’s inspirational run to the Division II championship, but here’s a couple of things that most people don’t know: Dorgan is also an Honor Roll student who will be continuing his academic career at Bryant University, and he’s one of his school’s top three-sport athletes.

Known throughout his high school career as a solid backchecking defenseman, Dorgan only netted six goals in his four seasons, but four amazingly came in BVS’s last three playoff games.

He scored twice in BVS’s best-of-three series-clinching victory over the Rogers/Middletown co-op team, and after he fired home the game-winning goal in double overtime to lead his team to a 2-1 win over Portsmouth High in the ‘Frozen Four’ semifinals, he forced OT in BVS’s four-overtime thriller with Lincoln High for the D-II title by tying the score with 30.2 seconds left in regulation.

Dorgan was also a lineman on the Cougars’ football team who helped NP win the Division IV Super Bowl as a sophomore and earned First-Team All-Division honors last fall, and he’s also been outstanding on the boys’ lacrosse team, as he was not only named the team’s MVP the past two seasons, but also scored 26 goals and added 22 assists last spring.

Kaedyn Minta-Jacobs

Girls' Wrestling

For the past three seasons, North Providence High’s girls’ wrestling program has been one of the very best in the state, and a huge reason for the Cougars’ success has been the excellence of Minta-Jacobs, who is currently ranked second in her senior class with a GPA of 4.29.

At the past three state meets, Minta-Jacobs took sixth place in the 126-pound weight class this season, fourth at 120 pounds as a junior, and second at 120 pounds as a sophomore.

Minta-Jacobs, who will attend the University of Rhode Island this fall, also shined at a few tournaments this winter and not only took first place in her weight class at the Prout School Duals Showcase in Wakefield, but also placed third at North Providence’s Joe Capone Invitational and the Central Falls Girls’ Invitational at Calcutt Middle School.

Smithfield HIGH SCHOOL

Kaeden Manni

Boys' Indoor Track & Field

Manni won the first of what promises to more state championships to come at this winter’s indoor meet by capturing the boys’ shot put title in a challenging field with a personal-best throw of 52 feet, which not only topped his PR by 8 3/4 inches, but also edged the runner-up finisher by 2 1/4 inches. He became the first Smithfield athlete to win a state title in this event since 1992.

A newcomer to the indoor track and field scene, Manni, who also finished ninth in the 25-pound weight at the state meet with a throw of 61-10 1/4, had delivered a PR throw of 62-2 3/4 earlier in the season.

Manni also took first place in the shot put at the Class C meet, and while he didn’t attempt the shot put until the previous outdoor season, he ended up being the only freshman to qualify for the event at the state meet.

Manni, who has been listed among the High Honors and Honors students in his class in his six quarters at SHS, is also an offensive lineman on the Sentinels’ football team. And as an 8th-grader at Gallagher Middle School, he helped the wrestling team not only capture the Central Division title with an undefeated record, but also take third place in his weight class at the state meet.

Annabelle Lally

Girls' Basketball

A consistent High Honors student each quarter, Lally also compiled plenty of honors after her superb season with the Sentinels. The junior forward not only earned First-Team All-Division and All-Class recognition, but she was also a Third-Team All-State pick and an Academic All-Stater.

Lally has been the Sentinels’ leading scorer since her freshman year, and this winter, she averaged 19 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. She also totaled 35 steals, 22 blocked shots, and 18 three-pointers, and shot 31 percent from three-point land. Her outstanding play helped Smithfield win 15 games for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Lally was also a First-Team All-Division and Second-Team All-Class selection last season and a Second-Team All-Division pick as a freshman.

“Annabelle is one of the standout players in D-II,” said Smithfield head coach Nicole Correnti. “She has an offensive mind and knows how to get to the hoop.”

Lally is also a standout lacrosse player who helped the Sentinels enjoy their best season in their 12-year existence last spring, as Smithfield reached the Division III finals and posted a 12-4 record. She scored a team-high 40 goals – giving her 72 in two seasons – to earn First-Team All-Division honors after landing Third-Team recognition as a 9th-grader.

And speaking of lacrosse, Lally’s sister, Charlotte, was the Sentinels’ All-Scholastics selection in that sport last spring.

Scituate HIGH SCHOOL

Robbie Newton

Boys' Wrestling

March was certainly a magnificent month for the senior captain and Honor Roll student: Newton kicked off the month by winning all four of his matches to capture the 132-pound state championship, and a weekend later, he returned to the Providence Career & Technical Academy to place second at the New England meet with a 3-1 record that included a thrilling double-overtime victory in the semifinals.

Newton, who also took third place at the New England meet as a sophomore, will graduate with over 100 career victories and four top-six finishes at the state meet. Newton finished third in the 106-pound class as a freshman, second at 106 pounds as a sophomore, and sixth at 120 pounds as a junior, but he probably would have placed higher in last season’s meet had an injury not forced him to sit out back-to-back matches in the consolation round.

Newton also took first place in several tournaments during his high school career, and when the Spartans competed in D-II in 2023 and ‘24, he captured back-to-back Division II/III sectional titles. He also picked up his 100th career win in only his 113th match.

Newton, who is planning to wrestle in the prep school ranks next year. is currently playing for his school’s boys’ lacrosse team as a midfielder.

Gabriella Russillo

Girls' Basketball

Described by her head coach, Stephanie Barlow, as “a driving force behind the team’s success this season,” Russillo stepped up as the Spartans’ senior captain, averaged 13.6 points per game, was among the state’s best three-point shooters with 73 treys, and shined in the backcourt with her sister, sophomore point guard Brooklyn Russillo.

“Every day at practice, she set the standard with her leadership, competitiveness, and all-around impact on the court,” Barlow said of Russillo, who can be found each quarter among her classmates who earn High Honors with Distinction “A vocal and assertive presence, she led every practice with purpose and consistently rose to the challenge when her team needed her most.”

Russillo also “made her presence felt on the defensive end and found ways to involve her teammates, making us better every day,” Barlow said. “And when she found her rhythm from beyond the arc, she was nearly unstoppable. That ability was on full display in one of the our biggest moments of the season – a close game against East Providence – when Gabby knocked down the game-winning three-pointer. The second she released it, I knew we won the game.”

Russillo, who will continue her academic and basketball career at CCRI, “was a pleasure to coach,” Barlow said. “She gave everything she had to this program and made everyone around her better. When she was challenged, she responded. When she was faced with adversity, she overcame it. She is a tough player, but an even stronger person. She will thrive wherever life takes her.”

Ponaganset HIGH SCHOOL

Colby Vital

Boys' Wrestling

High school wrestling careers don’t get any better than the one that Vital just concluded with the Chieftains. Not only did he capture a New England championship this season in the 165-pound weight class and win the 150-pound state title as a junior, but he also helped the Chieftains claim their last three straight state and New England titles.

A transfer student from Bishop Hendricken after his freshman year, Vital will end his time with the Chieftains with over 100 victories. At his last three New England meets, he took sixth place at 144 pounds as a freshman and a sophomore and placed fourth as a junior, and in the other three seasons he did not win a state title, he was the state runner-up in his weight class.

A regular presence on his school’s Highest Honors list, Vital will continue his wrestling and academic career this fall at Duke University.

Amber Shaw

Girls' Indoor Track & Field

Shaw entered Ponaganset four years ago as a standout gymnast with over a dozen years of experience, but when she graduates from PHS in a couple of months, she will do so as one of the greatest pole vaulters in the history of the RIIL.

Shaw made history as the state’s first indoor pole vault champion at this year’s RIIL meet – the event made its debut as a point-scoring event – and she cruised to her title, as the Bryant University commit cleared the bar in 11 1/2 feet to handily outdistance three athletes who cleared 8 1/2 feet.

She was also six inches shy of the state record that she shares with former La Salle Academy standout Jenna Poggi, who had set the mark in 2009. (Shaw had tied the record at the Yale Track Classic in New Haven, Conn.)

The Bryant University commit also produced back-to-back runner-up finishes at the last two state outdoor meets. As a sophomore, she placed second with a 10-foot clearance, and last June, she took home another silver medal with an 11-foot performance.

The championship was also the second in the last four months for Shaw, who was a setter and a co-captain for her school’s girls’ volleyball team that went 21-0 to win the program’s first Division III title. Shaw earned All-Division and All-Academic honors in that sport.

mount st. Charles Academy

Michael Tober

Boys' Hockey

A captain of the Mounties’ prep boys’ hockey team, Tober earned All-Scholastic honors following an outstanding winter season. A tireless worker and relentless competitor, Tober led by example with his work ethic and tenacity every day.

He finished as one of the Mounties’ top offensive contributors, recording 12 goals and three assists across 17 NEPSAC league games.

As a junior, Tober tallied eight goals and eight assists for the Mounties, and before stepping foot onto the Logee Street campus, he played for the East Greenwich/Toll Gate co-op hockey team, and as a sophomore, he was one of the squad’s top scorers with 10 goals and five assists.

Off the ice, Tober has also excelled in the classroom, maintaining a strong 3.33 GPA.

Addison Johnson

Girls' Basketball

A captain and a cornerstone of her school’s girls’ basketball program, the Cumberland native and talented guard led Mount to its first-ever NEPSAC playoff appearance while cementing her place in school history. She surpassed 1,000 career points, becoming just the ninth player in the team’s history – and third this winter – to reach the milestone.

A proven leader and consistent performer, she earned Team MVP honors as a sophomore and was named All-Division and All-Class in the RIIL during both her freshman and sophomore seasons, as she helped the Mounties post back-to-back 16-4 seasons in Division II.

Off the court, Johnson, who attended North Cumberland Middle School before arriving at Mount, sports a 3.95 GPA and has committed to Bard College this fall to continue her basketball career.

North Smithfield High School

Connor Reilly

Boys' Basketball

Reilly wrapped up his high school hoop career in style by averaging a team-high 19.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game to not only land First-Team All-Conference and First-Team All-Division honors, but also help the Northmen win 17 regular-season games for the second time in the last four years.

Reilly, who had also earned Third-Team All-Conference and First-Team All-Division honors as a junior, was also second on the Northmen in three-pointers with 41, and he averaged 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

A member of his school’s concert choir and a consistent presence among the High Honors and Honors students each quarter, Reilly was also recognized by the RIBCA as a repeat All-Academic selection.

Reilly also became the 14th player in the Northmen’s history to join the 1,000-point club, doing so late in the third quarter in his team’s 69-61 victory at home over Providence Country Day on Feb. 5. The three-year varsity player will graduate with 1,068 points to finish 12th among the all-time leading scorers.

Isabella Berrios

Cheerleading

In two short years, Berrios has established herself as one of the state’s best cheerleaders. She earned First-Team All-State honors for the second winter in a row to help the Northmen, who were minus two of their top seniors to season-ending injuries, capture the Division IV championship, as well as their third title in the last four years, at the RIIL Competition Championships at URI.

A consistent presence on NSHS’s Honor Roll, Berrios also helped the Northmen end their winter on a high note and place fourth for the second year in a row at the New England Interscholastic Spirit Championships at Worcester State University.

As a freshman, she made an immediate splash with the Northmen and received Third-Team All-State honors in Game Day cheerleading that fall, and during the winter season, she helped her squad win the RICCA (R.I. Cheerleading Coaches Association) D-IV title.

Woonsocket HIGH SCHOOL

Shamrock Thoun

Boys' Indoor Track & Field

Thoun ended his fantastic indoor track and field career by becoming a four-time national champion in the 25-pound weight at the Adidas Track Nationals at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. The Kennesaw State University commit repeated as the champion by airing out a throw of 80 feet, 10 1/2 inches that broke his meet record by 10 1/2 inches.

Thoun became a 13-time All-American with his victory, and he ended the indoor season as the nation’s second-ranked thrower in that event with a personal-best distance 83-1 3/4. Leading the way with a throw of 86-9 1/2 was Kayden Hulet of Sparks, Nev.

Thoun was also a Winter All-Scholastics selection last season after sweeping the Nike, New Balance, and Adidas national titles, but this winter, he finished second to Hulet at the New Balance meet at The Track in Boston and fourth at the Nike meet at The Armory in New York.

Prior to the national meets, Thoun not only repeated as the Class A champion with a throw of 80-1 3/4, but also as the state champion with his PR throw, which also broke the meet and facility records. At the New England Weight Championships, Thoun continued his winning ways by placing first with a throw of 82-8 that was more than 8 1/2 feet farther than the runner-up finisher.

Avaree Caron

Girls' Indoor Track & Field

Back among the All-Scholastics after earning recognition as a volleyball player last fall season and helping the Villa Novans win 16 matches and reach the Division IV finals, Caron ended an excellent indoor season by earning All-American honors in the girls’ 20-pound weight at the Adidas Track Nationals at the Virginia Sports Center.

Caron took second place with a throw of 52 feet, 3 3/4 inches that not only topped her personal-best mark by 10 inches, but also allowed her to finish the indoor season ranked 23rd in the country in that event. She also placed 10th at the New Balance national meet and 11th at the Nike national meet in the weight.

Prior to those national meets, Caron took second place in the shot put (34-3) and fourth in the weight (51-1 1/4) at the Class A meet, third in the weight (51-4) at the state meet, and 11th in the weight at the New England meet.

A High Honors student each quarter who is in the National Honor Society, Caron spent a year at Cumberland High before transferring to WHS. Her sister, Adelaide, was also an All-American thrower and an All-Scholastics selection during her time at Woonsocket, and she’s currently a freshman on the University of Virginia women’s outdoor track and field team.

Burrillville HIGH SCHOOL

Dylan Kafalas

Boys' Basketball

The future is a very bright one for Kafalas, a standout point guard who helped lead the Broncos to their third trip to the Division II finals in the last six seasons. In the 11th-seeded Broncos’ spirited march to the title game, which included victories over 2nd-seeded St. Raphael Academy, 3rd-seeded East Greenwich, and 6th-seeded Chariho, he averaged 24.5 points per game.

Kafalas averaged a team-high 19.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest this season to earn Second-Team All-Conference and First-Team All-Division honors, as well as a spot on the All-Tournament team. And as an up-and-coming freshman, Kafalas saw valuable minutes and averaged 6.3 points per game to help his team post a 16-9 record.

Kafalas, who has earned High Honors in all six quarters of his young high school career, is also an infielder on the Broncos’ baseball team, and in 2023, he helped the Burrillville Little League’s Junior Division (ages 13-15) all-star team capture the District IV championship.

Victoria Steele

Girls' Hockey

One of the best three-sport athletes at Burrillville High, Steele earned First-Team All-State honors again this winter with the Northern Rhode Island Yeti girls’ hockey team, as she scored 14 goals, added four assists, and proved night in and night out why she was regarded as one of the state’s elite defensemen.

A co-class president who is ranked sixth in her class, Steele was also a Second-Team All-State pick as a sophomore. She skated in the last two R.I. High School All-Star Hockey Showcases at Providence College’s Schneider Arena, and this season, she was named the Girls’ Showcase Jersey Mike’s “Player of the Game” for her excellent performance.

Steele was also a superb defensive player on BHS’s girls’ soccer team, and last year, she earned First-Team All-Division and All-Academic honors as she helped the Broncos return to the D-III semifinals. She is currently playing for the school’s girls’ lacrosse team, and she was also a First-Team All-Division pick last spring and a Second-Team selection as a sophomore.

Ricardo Moreno Galvez

Boys' Swimming

A newcomer to high school swimming, Galvez proved by the end of this season that he could be one of the area’s swimmers to watch next winter.

At the Division III meet, he helped his BVP/Central Falls/Pawtucket co-op squad take third place in the team standings by placing eighth in the 50-yard freestyle and helping the 200-yard freestyle team take second place and 400-yard freestyle relay team finish fifth, and at the state meet, he also swam on the 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished 10th.

The junior, who sports a GPA of 3.8, “put in immense discipline and determination to become better throughout the season,” reported head coach Kenzie McCormick, who noted that he trimmed 8.2 seconds off his time in the 50-yard freestyle over the course of the season.

“That looked like not missing a practice, staying after to work on his technique with the coaches or even with more advanced swimmers on our team, and always asking for pointers on how he can improve,” she continued. “He was crushing it by the end of the season.”

Alysha Lopes Varella

Cheerleading

One of the top cheerleaders on the first-year Central Falls/Blackstone Valley Prep co-op team, Varella helped her squad not only take sixth place at the Division II championship meet, but also excel at several invitationals and the RICCA (R.I. Cheerleading Coaches Association) D-II meet during the winter season.

In the classroom, Varella’s GPA is 3.7.
