There's nothing but talent among these

Fall All-Scholastics

For the fifth straight year, the Fall All-Scholastic section has returned to the Valley Breeze & Observer Newspapers, and it’s again recognizing a deserving male and female student-athlete from each of our circulation’s 16 high schools for their overall excellence in athletics and academics.

There are plenty of All-State, All-Division, and All-Academic selections among these 29 seniors and three juniors, and that includes a record eight football players, four student-athletes who have seen their older siblings grace this section, and three returning All-Scholastic picks.

A very special thanks to the athletic directors and high school coaches who took the time to help with their input and information on their schools’ selections, as well as photographer Erik Scalavino, who took a handful of these pictures, and our publisher, Jamie Quinn, for his exceptional work on the design of the cover of this section. Without these contributions, the creation of this special section wouldn’t have been possible.

We hope you again enjoy reading this special section as much as we enjoyed putting it together and honoring these tremendous student-athletes.

Steven Sayee

Football

Last month was certainly a special one for the talented wide receiver. Not only did he catch seven passes to earn his team's Most Valuable Players honors in the first-year Pawtucket Schools football team's clash with St. Raphael Academy on Thanksgiving Eve, but he also picked up Second-Team All-Division honors and Pawtucket's popular Key Player Spirit Award.

If perseverance was a person, their name would be Steven Sayee.  His journey to get to this point of playing high school football has been filled with moments of difficulty, doubt, and delay, yet each of these experiences has strengthened his resolve and deepened his understanding of what it means to be a member of our football team."

He has learned that progress is not always immediate, but persistence and hard work always yield growth. Steven has been a shining example of that, and he has made me a better coach and our football team a better team"

Iara Cardoso Barros

Girls' Soccer

A transfer student from Portugal, Cardoso Barros made an instant impact on the Pawtucket Schools team and landed First-Team All-Conference and All-Division honors. The talented senior center midfielder led her team in goals and assists, and not only did she scored at least one goal in all but one of her team's 20 Division IV games, but during a three-game stretch, she netted a hat trick in each game.

Iara is a force to be reckoned with. Her commitment and love for the game is unwavering, and she served as a role model for many of the young players. We have been lucky as a program to have had great players, but Iara, in one season, has etched her legacy among others that have come before her and will forever be named among the great Pawtucket players."

Iara's absence from the team will be felt greatly, and her efforts will not soon be forgotten," added Maigret, whose squad went 9-8-2 during the regular season and returned to the D-IV quarterfinals. "The team and coaches wish her nothing but the best and cannot wait to see the great things she will surely accomplish in the future."

Football

Another recipient of the Key Spirit Player Award, Silva shined as a hard-hitting linebacker who was among the Pawtucket Schools' leaders in tackles

and I have had the honor of coaching this young man for four years," said Pawtucket head coach Jason DeLawrence. "From the first time Josh put on a helmet for me, he has been nothing but a great example of how you would want a student athlete to be."

On the field, Josh shows passion for the sport and a commitment to win. His effort is unmatched, whether it is in practice or in a game. But what's even better than what he does on the field is what he does off it. Josh maintains a strong commitment to personal development, respect for teammates and coaches, and a positive attitude in every setting. He represents the core values of dedication and integrity."
